Questions to ask before you choose a provider

Calling a provider can feel awkward. Keep this list handy and take notes. It is fine to call several.

Availability and logistics

  • Are you taking new clients? How long is the waitlist?
  • What ages do you serve? Do you work in home, at a clinic, at school or by video?
  • What days and hours do you have?

Cost

  • Do you take my insurance or Apple Health? Can you check my benefits?
  • What will I owe per visit, and are there fees for missed appointments?
  • Do you need an evaluation or order from a doctor first?

Approach

  • What does a typical session look like?
  • How do you set goals, and how do I take part?
  • How do you show progress, and how often do we meet to talk about it?
  • Who will work with my child day to day, and who supervises them?

Fit

  • What experience do you have with children like mine?
  • How do you handle a hard day?
  • Can we visit or do a trial session first?

Keep going if it does not feel right

Wait lists are common, so join more than one while you decide. Washington's Health Care Authority gives the same tip for ABA: contact all the providers in your area and take the first good fit.1 If your child has Medicaid, ask each provider whether they accept your state's Medicaid plan.
